Japanese Knotweed Treatment Options: Herbicide vs Excavation

Herbicide treatment

Herbicide treatment is the most widely used approach to Japanese knotweed management. A specialist herbicide is applied during the growing season across multiple seasons — typically three to five years. It is generally less expensive than excavation and less disruptive to the property.

Excavation

Excavation involves physically removing the knotweed rhizome from the ground to at least one metre depth. All material is classified as controlled waste and must be disposed of at a licensed facility. Excavation can achieve clearance within a single season and is typically used on development sites.
