Japanese Knotweed in Winter: What to Look For

Winter identification

Hollow brown canes stand through winter, becoming increasingly brittle but remaining recognisable. Canes are jointed, bamboo-like, typically 1–3 cm in diameter, and occur in dense clusters up to 2–3 metres tall. In late winter and early spring, red-purple shoots begin emerging from the crown.
