Rhododendron Ponticum: The Woodland Invasive

What is Rhododendron ponticum?

Rhododendron ponticum is a large, evergreen shrub widely planted in the UK in the 19th century. It has naturalised across large areas of upland Britain, particularly in western Scotland, Wales and south-west England, forming dense stands that exclude all other vegetation.

Management

Control of established rhododendron is difficult and expensive. The plant resprouts vigorously from cut stumps. Effective management typically requires a combination of physical removal and herbicide treatment over multiple years.
