Running bamboo spreads through underground rhizomes and can cause serious problems for property owners when it crosses boundaries or damages structures and paving. Legal disputes between neighbours arising from bamboo spread are increasingly common.
Not all bamboo is problematic — clumping species expand slowly and stay relatively contained. Running species, principally in the Phyllostachys genus, can spread several metres in a season and pass under walls, fences and hardstanding.
